Thyroid Dysfunction and Chiropractic Care

The thyroid is an important part of the body in that it regulates the metabolism, controls body temperature, and ensures proper growth of the body. If the thyroid isn’t functioning as it should, it could be the cause of health concerns. Hyperthyroidism (overproduction of necessary hormones) and hypothyroidism (underproduction of necessary hormones) will lead to larger health issues.

Whether you are experiencing hypo- or hyperthyroidism, rest assured that chiropractic care can aid in improving thyroid function. Like the rest of the body’s systems, the thyroid is controlled by the central nervous system, composed of the brain and spinal cord.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT STUDY FOR THYROID DISORDER

Case studies show the effectiveness of chiropractic care for restoring thyroid function. In one case study, a 34-year-old pregnant woman suffered from irritable bowel syndrome accompanied with hypothyroidism. She received two months of consistent chiropractic care which resolved all issues and even allowed her to stop taking medications.

Another case study of a 50-year-old man who relied on synthetic thyroid hormones was able to vastly improve his thyroid function and decrease the amount of synthetic hormones he was taking. As an added bonus, he also improved his posture through spinal alignments and found relief from back and neck pain, improving his quality of life and overall health.

Approaches to Thyroid Dysfunction

Traditional Medical Approach: Patients report weight gain, chronic joint pain, feeling cold, and possible depression. Thyroid Hormone Replacement is often recommended. Thyroid replacement drugs include: Synthroid, Levoxyl, Cytomel, and Tirosint.*

Prescription Drug SIde Effects: Short term side effects include: difficulty sleeping, headaches, hair loss, appetite disruption and heart palpitations.

Long term side effects include brittle bones (osteoporosis) and heart attacks.

Chiropractic Approach: Check for subluxations at C4, C5, C6, C7, or T1. Specifically, adjust ONE subluxated segment or coupled motion distortion.

Take thorough history to see if false diagnosis of thyroid was made.

* Once thyroid medication is required, it is recommended to be taken for life

The thyroid has an important job in the body. It regulates the metabolism, controls the temperature, and ensures proper growth of the body.

Chiropractic care helps to treat:

  1. The root cause

  2. To restore nerve communication

  3. Improve whole body health
